This really is the sort of stuff that I hear every day, so it doesn’t make the blog unless the comments are part of an atypical situation.  My favorite from the video: “Are you the Little Spoon?”

Yep.  It’s a documentary about tall girls.  I am so excited.  The author of the Tall Book is apparently going to be featured pretty prominently throughout, but the documentary also looks at the lives of a couple younger tall girls who have had surgery or who are undergoing hormone therapy so they don’t grow so tall.  (I can already tell some of that is going to be heartbreaking.)  Also, it features two 6’2″ models who are apparently often told they are too tall to be a model.

Anyway, I’m pretty excited!

Checkout Person: You two are sisters, right?

My sister: Yep

Checkout Person: You look just alike.

Us: Yeah

Checkout Person: Who is the older one?  I think you are [points at my sister, who is younger]

My sister: Oh, no, actually I’m younger.  Why do I look older?

Checkout Person: Well, usually the younger sibling ends up being the tallest one.

I guess that’s technically true in my family, because my brother is tallest.  But I feel like he should be tallest–he is a guy after all. At any rate, we’ve never heard that before–that the younger sibling is the taller one–but it could be true.  Or the lady could have just been trying to recover from saying my sister looked older than me. Who knows.

In other news, I finished about half of my Christmas shopping while I was there.  I feel poor now.

Checkout Dude: Not too often that you see two tall people together.

Me: I guess.

Checkout Dude to My Boyfriend: How tall are you?

My Boyfriend: 6’6″

Checkout Dude: I got you beat [notably, Checkout Dude was not taller than My Boyfriend].  My girlfriend’s dad is 6’8″

Can you tell me what the point of this conversation was?  Was this guy so upset by the fact that someone was taller than him, that he needed to point out knowing someone even taller?  It’s so strange.

Me: Well how tall is your girlfriend?

Checkout Dude: Tall, but not as tall as you.

Me: Well I guess I have you beat then.

Just because I haven’t been blogging doesn’t mean the “Tall Encounters” have stopped, though!  Unfortunately, I don’t remember the context of a lot of the situations, so I’m just going to throw a few recent comments into one post.

Guard: Excuse me, ma’am?  I’m not going to ask you the question everyone asks you, so I’m just going to stand next to you.

Because that’s so much better, Mr. Guard…

IT Person to my boss when I was recently in Dallas for work: That girl shouldn’t wear heels.

Probably not, but I’m going to anyway…

Tall Older Relative to my sister: Why is your brother dating a midget?  My son is dating a midget, your brother is.  This has got to stop.

Ok, that last one wasn’t annoying so much as just funny.  I like my brother’s short girlfriend though.  She’s nice.  But in the past, I did joke (ok, so I was semi-serious) with my 6’5″ brother that he shouldn’t be dating girls shorter than 5’10″.  This girl is maaaaaaybe 5’3″.

At least three members of my family wanted to say something to her. My sister was pissed.

So today, I was mildly annoyed to have to participate in a conversation.  Even more annoyed that it was about height.

Middle-aged dude: Is your last name Lobo?

Me: No

Middle-aged dude: Cuz you look like her.  You know who I mean? (He means former WNBA player Rebecca Lobo, who I’ve been told I look like one other time since moving to DC).

Me: Yep, I’m not her.

I guess this was a little more creative than the usual, do you play basketball.  But still, don’t talk to me on the metro in the  morning. I’m not awake yet.  Also, I don’t look like Rebecca Lobo.  We are tall and have light brown hair.  That’s the only similarity.  Also, she’s a full ten years older than me.  I hope I don’t look that old.

Last week in a CVS, I was sitting in one of their chairs waiting for my prescription to be filled (playing Angry Birds to kill the time).  A young, tall pharmacy tech was helping an elderly lady check out.  The whole process was taking a long time and at one point, while she was pulling out her wallet and  counting her money, he started practicing his basketball shooting form.  He took a few faux-practice shots.

Elderly Lady: Is there a fly?  (assuming I guess that he was swatting at a fly)

Young Tech: Umm, no, I was just…never mind.

It made me giggle.  But then the pharmacy couldn’t fill my prescription for some reason, so I was less happy.

Priest to person in front of us: Welcome

Priest to us: You people are tall!

Priest to person behind us: Welcome

We laughed.
